NZ Venison Production Selling Through to Market Well

18-Feb-2005

New Zealand venison is reported to be selling well. Total New Zealand venison production has increased markedly over the past year (YE Sept 2004) to 683,000 deer.

“It is highly significant that this national kill is reported by exporters and importers to have sold through to consumption well” said Clive Jermy, Chairman, Deer Industry New Zealand.

“While prices remain at historically low levels, it is important to understand that the New Zealand industry has been able to produce and sell this quantity of venison. This has been done without further sacrificing price”.

The New Zealand deer industry’s ability to sustain this level of supply will be limited. It stands to reason that with the markets’ ability to absorb the volume it has, supply and demand fundamentals will come back into line.

It is also clear that consumers are eating more New Zealand venison than ever before.

“The industry can take some heart from its achievement in managing this higher level of kill through to consumption. With a decrease on the horizon supply and demand fundamentals will start to come back into balance. Combined with the significant marketing endeavours underway, this will form the basis of a sustainable future” Jermy concluded.
